Tools to Avoid

Discovering the right tools is an integral part of the woodworking journey. Selecting appropriate tools not only saves time and money but also increases productivity and enhances the quality of your work. Over the years, I’ve had the misfortune of investing in several inadequate tools that have hindered my progress and depleted my resources. Allow me to share my experiences to help you avoid making similar mistakes.

  1. Delta 31-255x Drum Sander: A drum sander can be a useful addition to a woodworking shop. However, the Delta 31-255x Drum Sander was a significant disappointment. The machine was plagued with alignment issues due to its flawed lead screw design, which led to uneven sanding. Additionally, the low-quality plastic gears and cheap rubber belt were prone to failure. To add insult to injury, the tool was discontinued, making it impossible to source replacement parts. I paid $800 for a tool that quickly became nothing more than an expensive paperweight.
  2. Ryobi Detail Sander: The Ryobi Detail Sander was another regrettable purchase. Despite its compact design, the tool generated excessive vibration, causing discomfort and fatigue within minutes of use. This tool was so physically taxing that I reverted to manual sanding, which proved to be less strenuous on my arm. In the end, I sold the sander on eBay at a 50% loss.
  3. Harbor Freight 6″ Jointer: The Harbor Freight 6″ Jointer proved to be a futile investment. Despite numerous adjustments, I was unable to achieve a true 90-degree jointed board. The tool was relegated to producing shingles, a far cry from its intended purpose. Eventually, I sold the jointer on Craigslist at a 75% loss, disclosing its shortcomings to the buyer, who optimistically believed he could rectify the issues.
  4. Ryobi Benchtop Table Saw: The Ryobi Benchtop Table Saw was a source of constant frustration. It required incessant tinkering and adjustment. The angle adjustment mechanism, composed of a flimsy plastic rack and pinion, failed within a week. The poorly designed throat plate, a simple indented metal plate, made it impossible to create a zero-clearance insert. Furthermore, the saw was exceptionally noisy, making it a nuisance to operate. It was, in every sense, a nightmare to work with.

These are just a few examples of the subpar tools I’ve encountered in my woodworking career. The cost of these tools extends beyond the monetary investment. They negatively impact productivity, hinder progress, and foster frustration. Through these experiences and by coaching numerous students with similar encounters, I have gained insights into the factors contributing to tool selection success.
