What I Liked Most

  • It filters up to 0.1 microns
  • It’s quiet
  • Easy-to-clean filter
  • Long warranty

What Could Be Improved

  • It takes a while to filter the air

4. Best Air Filter for Mid-sized Workshops – JET AFS-1000B Air Filtration System

JET AFS-1000B Air Filtration System, 1-Micron Filter, 1044...
  • Air Filtering Efficiency: Outer filter captures 98% of 5-micron particles, while inner filter captures 85% of 1-micron particles
  • Convenient Controls: The remote control has built-in timer with 2/4/8-hour settings (system automatically shuts off)
  • Versatile Positioning: Four eye bolts let you hang the unit from shop ceiling, and foam pads keep from marring your workbench

Now, this is one of the most popular options for people with mid-sized shops. If you work in a large shop or have a long list of clients, you need a system that can keep up with all the particulates.

The Jet AFS-1000B was built for such a purpose. Like the Wen, this one has a ⅙ HP motor, but it is more efficient at eliminating dust. It has three speeds of 550, 702, and 1044 CFM, and it filters the air in a 400 sq. ft room up to twelve times an hour.

This air filtration system has a 5-micron outer filter and a 1-micron inner. While the outer filter is disposable, the inner one can be cleaned and reused.

What I like most about this system is that I can either hang it or place it on a workbench, thanks to its rubber feet. Despite its powerful capabilities, it only weighs 61 pounds, making it fairly portable – although I need to be aware of the noise as it emits 96dB at the fastest speed.

However, I can use the timer to run it on the highest setting for 2, 4, or 8 hours while I’m out of the store. To top that off, it even has a 5-year warranty!

One thing I need to keep in mind is that some units have a faulty control board so I should contact customer care before using it. All things considered, this air filtration system looks like it would be perfect for my needs.

What I Liked Most

  • It can filter large workshops
  • The inner filter is reusable
  • The timer run for up to 8 hours
  • It has a long warranty

What Could Be Improved

  • It is quite noisy
  • Some units have a faulty control board

5. Great for Hobbyists – Shop Fox W1830

  • 1/8 horsepower, 120-Volt, single phase, CSA certified
  • Airflow capacity: 260, 362, and 409 CFM
  • 3 speeds: 1200, 1400 and 1750 RPM

I chose the Shop Fox W1830 air filtration system for my woodshop because it may not have the most powerful motor, but it does an amazing job of removing 99% of particulates from a 400 sq ft area.

With its 5-micron outer filter and 1-micron inner one, this AFS purifies the air at least seven times per hour, within the recommended range for fine dust particles.

It is convenient, too – the outer filter is disposable, and the inner one can easily be cleaned with an air compressor. Plus, it’s lightweight (just 31 pounds), so I can keep it on my workbench or hang it up with the included accessories.

It is super quiet, making it the perfect addition to my workshop.

One important factor to note is this unit works best when you have a dust collection system. You can set the timer for up to four hours after you leave the shop, and you can tell the difference when you return.

Besides a limited timer, the only real problem with this unit is the remote control. Unfortunately, you need to point it directly at the panel and be close to it, or it won’t work.

The downside means you need to put a step stool under it, or you shouldn’t hang it so high just in case you need to operate it directly. Otherwise, this is a near-flawless woodshop air cleaner with a long lifespan.

What I Liked Most

  • Portable device
  • It can work on a bench or ceiling
  • It has a long lifespan
  • Reusable inner filter

What Could Be Improved

  • The remote control only works nearby
  • Short warranty of only two years

6. Best Shop Air Filtration System for Large Spaces – Jet AFS-2000

Sale
JET Air Filtration System, 1-Micron Filter, 1700 CFM, 115V...
  • Three-filter system (includes slot for optional filter) with air diffuser disperses outgoing air into a broader pattern
  • Remote control has built-in timer with 2, 4, and 8-hour settings (shuts system off at the end of time setting)
  • 1-micron inner pocket filter is removable for easy cleaning

This is the most powerful air filtration system on my list. The Jet AFS-2000 can filter the air in a 1600 sq ft wood shop up to 14 times an hour!

The top speed of 1700 CFM is a significant improvement on its baby brother, even though it is also a large device. One thing that sets this unit besides its output is the ⅓ hp motor, which is double the average.

Given its large size (it weighs 110 pounds), it is most efficiently hung on the ceiling. However, it has rubber feet if you choose to place it on a bench.

Another distinguishing feature professional woodworkers will appreciate is its triple filter. It has an electrostatic outer filter, an inner pocket filter, and a diffuser filter. While the inner pocket filter is reusable, the electrostatic filter isn’t.

As expected, this unit has a remote control with which you can adjust the speed and set the timer to 2, 4, or 8 hours. In addition, the remote has long-range, so you can operate it from anywhere within your shop.

One rare feature that I like the most about it is its adjustable exhaust. This will allow you to pick the best location for the filtered air to hit first, thus improving the air quality.

With large devices, power consumption is often an issue. Luckily, this unit has overload protection. Despite its high price point, all the reviews have been positive, except for a problem some people had with the packaging.

However, this is not unique to this dust filtration system, and luckily, there is a 5-year warranty if your product is damaged during shipping.

What I Liked Most

  • It can work in large shops
  • It has a powerful motor
  • It comes with a 5-year warranty
  • It has three filters

What Could Be Improved

  • Packaging is often subpar

  • CFM SPEED: Offers 3 different air flow speed variations at a rate of 300, 350 or 400 cubic feet per minute

I recently purchased the Powertec AF4000 3-speed air filtration system, and it’s been a great addition to my small workshop. With an impressive 300-400 CFM output, this unit can filter out 99% of airborne particulates from its 5 and 1-micron filters in a 400 sq ft area.

I appreciate the infrared remote, which allows me to set a timer for 1, 2, or 4 hours at the end of my session – so I can return to clean air. The Powertec is a little small, and it isn’t heavy.

This means it will fit on any flat surface near my workbench, or I can hang it up with the accessories. The only downside is the noise level, comparable to a vacuum cleaner when set at its highest speed.

However, this device won’t sound too loud if you’re already used to working with power tools like palm sanders, shop vacs, and drills will be quiet.

All in all, I’m pleased with this woodworking air filtration system. It’s made my workshop much safer and more pleasant to use.

What I Liked Most

  • Lightweight design
  • It has a reusable inner filter
  • It has a remote control with a timer
  • It can fit on a table or the ceiling

What Could Be Improved

  • It is slightly louder than its competitors
  • Only suitable for small shops

8. Best for Professionals – WEN 3417 Industrial-Strength Air Filtration System

WEN 3417 3-Speed Remote-Controlled Industrial-Strength Air...
  • Includes a 1-micron filter and a 5-micron pre-filter, both of which can be easily replaced
  • Dimensions – 30.3” L x 24” W x 12.2” H | Electrical Requirements – 110-120V, 60 Hz, 3A | Air flow – 556/702/1044 cubic feet per minute | Cover rooms up to – 1000 sq ft. | Noise rating – 63 to 68 dB
  • Programmable timer automatically shuts unit off after set number of minutes

When I first got my hands on the 3417 model, I was blown away by its industrial-strength power. It’s perfect for professionals because it can purify a room up to 1,000 sq ft up to 7.5 times per hour.

With its 3-speed remote control, I can easily switch between 556, 702, or 1044 CFM to eliminate nearly 100% of irritants and airborne dust. The RF remote works within a 26-foot radius, giving me even more convenience.

Similar to the 3410 model, this one also has a 5-micron outer filter and a 1-micron inner filter. However, both filters need to be replaced, which is a bit of a letdown, but the replacements are not too expensive. Plus, the low price point for this device makes up for that shortcoming.

One of the best things about the 3417 model is that it’s powerful yet relatively quiet, with a highest noise output of only 68 dB. The only downside is that the timer is limited to 4 hours. However, if you have a small workshop, this is more than enough time for it to work effectively.

Lastly, even though it weighs 55 pounds, it’s relatively easy to install and hang securely from the ceiling with the provided tools.

What I Liked Most

  • It works in large rooms
  • It is quiet for a large system
  • It is relatively lightweight
  • It comes with a long-range remote

What Could Be Improved

  • The timer is limited to 4 hours
  • Both filters need to be replaced

9. Best Motor for Small Shops – Rikon Power Tools 62-450

PJ Masks Owelette Mini 10" Backpack Tote, One Size
  • Keep your shop's air breathable with this air filtration system
  • Designed for smaller workshops and can be operated manually or with a remote control
  • Choose between 3 speeds at 300, 350, and 400 CFM depending on the amount of filtration needed

When it comes to small-wood shop category air filtration systems, the Rikon 62-450 caught my attention with its impressive features.

It has three speeds of 250, 350, and 450 CFM, which is pretty standard, but what sets it apart is its 1/4hp motor. This allows it to purify more air faster in a 400 sq ft. space than its direct competitors.

One great thing about this filtration system is the remote control that comes with it. You can set the timer to 1, 2, or 4 hours using the infrared remote, but you need to have a line of sight for it to work.

The Rikon 62-450 has a 5-micron outer filter and a 1-micron inner filter. Unfortunately, neither filter is reusable, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

Moving this unit around your shop is easy, thanks to the carry handle, and hanging it from your ceiling is also an option with the provided brackets.

The low noise level of this unit is another impressive feature. It runs at a purring sound of between 50 – 60dB, which allows me to watch YouTube videos while working without any disturbance.

Lastly, the steel cabinet construction of this AFS is robust and gives me peace of mind knowing it can withstand any bumps or knocks in my shop. And if any issues do arise, the 5-year warranty has me covered.

Air Filtration Systems for Woodshop Buyer’s Guide

What is an Air Filtration System for Woodshop?

An air filtration system is a multifaceted system that eliminates wood dust and contaminants in the air while circulating purified air into your workshop.

These contaminants could be toxic fumes from wood finishes, smoke from pyrography, or dust that customers may drag in with them.

You can have a whole-house air filtration system, but it is best to have one dedicated to your workshop. These tend to be more powerful at extracting dust floating around.

An air filtration system is crucial if you or anyone frequenting your shop has a respiratory condition, allergies, or sensitive skin.

Why Do You Need the Best Air Filtration System?

If you’re a woodworker, you know the importance of air filtration. But do you have the best shop filtration system? If not, now is the time to consider upgrading.

Here’s why you need the best air filtration system for the shop.

1. Protect your lungs from wood dust

Without the best woodshop air filtration system, it would be hard to prevent wood dust from entering your lungs. The danger with wood dust is that it may carry chemicals from the wood or any parasites living in the wood.

If it lodges in your lungs, it can cause severe respiratory conditions.

2. Wood dust is carcinogenic

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) revealed that wood dust is carcinogenic to humans. It is known to cause nose cancer.

As a result, it is crucial not only to use protective equipment whilst working but also to have the best woodshop air filtration system.

3. It is necessary for people with allergies

If you are allergic to dust or have a respiratory condition like asthma, it is absolutely necessary to have a woodshop air filtration system.

Air filtration systems remove allergens and particles that might irritate your skin, eyes, nose, or throat. If you have customers coming to your store, you can’t anticipate what health condition they might have, so it is also best to stay on the safe side.

4. It keeps the shop cleaner

It is normal to come to your shop on a new day and find dust everywhere. The dust particles that had been floating around the previous day eventually settled.

If you don’t like cleaning intensely every single day, a woodshop air filtration system will save some of the stress.

What is an Air Filtration System for Woodshop?

How to Choose the Best Workshop Air Filtration System

With so many different woodworking air filtration systems available, how do you know which one is right for you?

Keep reading to find out the factors to consider when choosing a workshop air filtration system.

1. The size of your woodshop

When you’re looking for the best air filtration system for a woodshop, the key component is your woodshop. You will notice from our list that we have provided dimension guides to give you an idea of what to buy.

Besides looking at the square footage, an AFS can handle, a simpler way is to look at the cubic feet per minute (CFM). This measures how quickly air is circulated through your shop.

For woodshops roughly 400 sq ft, you should look for a unit that has 400 CFM or 450 CFM. For a large woodshop of at least 600 sq ft, don’t buy anything less than 1,000 CFM.

As a woodshop has a lot of fine dust particles in the air, we recommend 6-8 ACH.

2. Motor size of the shop air filtration system

The next thing to consider is the size or power of the motor. The motor determines how fast the fans spin, thus, how efficiently it can purify the air.

For a small woodshop or a CFM of no more than 450, you will find that the motors are usually ⅙ hp or ⅛ hp. The only exception is the Rikon, which has a ¼ hp motor.

Larger units may also have a ⅙ hp motor, but the beastly Jet AFS2000 is a cut above the rest, running at ⅓ hp.

A stronger motor will reduce the chances of overheating, as the unit won’t struggle to circulate all the air in your shop.

3. Remote control/usability

While many woodworking air filtration systems can be placed on a bench, they are bulky units that will occupy space. Therefore, the eBay spot is to mount them on the ceiling. This is why a good remote control is necessary.

The two main remotes are infrared (IR) and radio frequency (RF). Infrared remotes need a line of sight, while RF doesn’t. Both types of remotes have pros and cons, so that should not be the deciding factor.

However, the Shop Fox has a limited IR remote, which requires you to point it directly at the control panel. This means if you’re backing the AFS or are too far from it, the remote won’t work.

So unless you plan on using this unit on a workbench, you will have to place a stool under it to input instructions manually when the remote gets on your nerves.

4. Type of filters

As long as the air purifier for the woodshop works, should you care about the filters? Yes, you absolutely should, for several reasons.

The first reason is that the type and number of filters will determine the percentage of airborne particulates the AFS will remove. The second reason is how often you may need to replace the filters.

All the options on our list are excellent at eliminating fine dust, so it is the second category that gives a few issues. For example, the Wen’s have two filters each; sadly, both need to be replaced.

This is an added burden on time and money. Contrast that with the electrostatic filter for the Powermatic PM1250, which lasts for 3,000 hours before the filter needs to be replaced.

At the least, a hassle-free AFS should have a reusable inner filter that can be cleaned easily. Outer filters will need to be replaced for all of them, so that’s not a deal-breaker.

5. Noise pollution

Nearly 17% of adults between 20-69 years suffer from noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Unsurprisingly, carpenters and woodworkers have a higher chance of NIHL than the average citizen.

That is why it is crucial to reduce noise in your woodshop any chance you can. Your woodworking air filtration system should not be an added source of the noise; luckily, it doesn’t have to be.

You can get powerful systems that emit less than 69 dB. The powerful PM1250 is quieter than a normal conversation, and the small units are less noisy than a fan.

6. Timer

This is a feature you will appreciate at the start of the day. When you’re working in the woodshop, you expect there to be a lot of dust in the air, so you get used to it.

However, when you’re starting a new day, and the room is dusty or irritating your throat, it is a bad sign for your health.

That is why it is important to be able to run your shop’s air filtration system even when you are out of the shop. Of course, you can leave it to run all night, but this will run up your electric bill.

The typical timer for a small woodshop maxes out at 4 hours, while larger ones should go up to 8 hours. The PM 1200 does better at 9 hours.

7. Price

Now, we come to what you’ve been waiting for, but as mentioned earlier, this can be a bit misleading. The cheapest product on our list requires more frequent filter replacements, so it may not necessarily be cheaper in the long run.

On the other hand, the most expensive product isn’t necessarily the best. Therefore, you should only consider the price after you have factored in the criteria above.

8. Energy consumption and safety

Woodshop air filtration systems naturally consume a lot of power. After all, they are constantly chugging while you’re in them or even when you’re gone.

There isn’t much that separates these units in terms of usage, apart from the Powermatic PM1250, which is Energy Star certified.

Some units of the Jet AFS-1000B have a problem with the control board that causes them to consume a lot of electricity when it twitches. This could also cause overheating, so safety features are critical.

To prevent issues with overheating or an energy surge, the PM-1200 has a pop-out fuse.

9. Warranty

Finally, a decent warranty is a nice thing to have. The best woodshop air filtration system should last several years, but if for any reason it doesn’t, the warranty will make up for it.

The longest warranty offered on our list is five years. However, even when the product has a 2-year warranty, you can still expect it to last for at least a decade as long as you take care of it.

10. Air Change Per Hour (ACH)

First, it is critical to evaluate how many airflow units your workshop requires. Although all devices may not offer the same amount of air cycles, you can identify one with an appropriate CFM rating if you know precisely what to look for.

If you want to buy several small units instead of one big one to save costs, also look at how often it cycles all the air in an hour.

Most health experts recommend at least four air changes per hour (ACH) to prevent the spread of allergens and highly-contagious airborne infections.

11. Airflow Rating

If you need a precise number of air changes per hour, then make sure to determine the CFM rating of the unit before buying it. Alternatively, calculate how many units your shop would require for adequate ventilation.

This feature is usually communicated in terms of cubic feet per minute (CFM). CFM tells us how quickly air moves through the unit. Generally, higher ratings will result in more powerful airflow and a larger number of air changes an hour.

12. Air Speeds

More than anything else, we advise buying filters with variable speed settings. They provide not only a wider range of use but can also control the amount of ambient noise the air filtration system produces.

Through this feature, the users get more freedom to control the unit’s operational speed and the noise it produces. It also determines the applications the model can handle.

13. Portability Or Fixed Installation

Most workshop air filtration systems are designed to be hung overhead. Portable models are the ones you can move around the workshop because they’re light enough to carry.

I personally prefer a model that’s light and portable so I can move it around the shop as needed. This helps me keep my air clean without having to invest in a large, fixed system.

The best part is that most of these models come with wheels, so they’re easy to transport. Plus, I don’t have to worry about permanent fixtures or taking up too much space.

14. Quality

Like it or not, high-quality units often come from reputable brands. If you check our recommendations, the products have internal motors that can withstand heavy demand.

Also, they are designed with superior materials that are durable and able to withstand the rigors of daily use. When it comes to quality, you can trust our recommendations.

Installation And Maintainance of a Woodshop Dust Filtration System

To optimize convenience, install this device near a wall outlet. It is essential to evaluate the unit’s power requirements, as larger filters necessitate a 240V circuit.

To guarantee the longevity of any weighty product, it is essential to include additional support and fastenings.

Additionally, making sure that you frequently clean your device will help to keep the airflow functioning optimally by preventing blockages caused by dust or other particles over time.

Don’t forget to refer to the product manual before cleaning and/or replacing any filters – it’s essential!

Tips For Maximizing The Use Of Your Shop’s Air Filtration System

  • Positioning the device at the center of your shop or where most work is typically carried out ensures optimal performance.
  • This air filtration system should be able to monitor the shop’s air quality in real-time.
  • The system should not be obstructed along the path of airflow where it draws air.
  • To ensure optimal performance, clean or replace the filters with the instructions in your manual.

FAQs

Is the air filter the same as a dust collector?

No, an air filter or a shop air filtration system is not the same as a dust collector. A dust collector is usually connected to a power sander or positioned close to a rotary tool to collect large dust molecules. On the other hand, a shop air filtration system absorbs microscopic dust particles. These are more dangerous to your health as they tend to float and could end up in the lungs, eyes, or nose.

What is the best indicator of an air filter’s performance?

The cubic feet per minute (CFM) is the best indicator of an air filter’s performance. The CFM measures how quickly the workshop air filtration system can remove airborne particulates in a given space. Larger workshops require higher CFMs of at least 1,000, while small workshops are fine with roughly 400 CFM. Another thing to look at is the size of the air filter. The best shop air filtration systems tend to have a 5-micron filter and a 1-micron filter. If it can’t filter 1 micron, it isn’t worth it.

Where should I install my air filter for the most efficient filtering?

While many air filters are designed to be placed on workbenches, the best place is on the ceiling at the center of the room. This will give you the most efficient filtering. Place the air filter above head level.

How to extend the life of the filters?

The only way to extend the life of the filters is to clean them as recommended by the manufacturer. Some filters can be cleaned with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner, while others can be washed with soap. Low-maintenance air filters don’t need to be cleaned as often.

Is it better to position the filter on my workbench or hang it?

It is usually best to hang a woodshop air filter than to place it on a workbench. However, if you have sensitive skin or a respiratory condition, you might want the air filter as close to you as possible.

What filter is best for sawdust?

For sawdust, HEPA-rated filters represent the most effective option. These powerful units are capable of trapping even minuscule particles measuring as small as 0.3 microns with remarkable efficiency.

What MERV rating do I need for woodworking?

For adequate air filtration in woodworking shops, a MERV rating of 10 is required. To provide optimal dust interception, however, it’s recommended to go beyond the basic requirement and invest in filters with a MERV rating above 12.

How to determine the most effective air filtration system?

CFM rating is an excellent way to gauge the efficiency of any filter. This feature will tell you how quickly your system can rid the air in your workshop of unwanted pollutants. Depending on the size of the area, ideal systems range from 400 to 1000 CFM.
